The first 24 hours!!!
As the sun set on the Aravali ridge, a group of a score and more of young adults came together to what is the continuing phase of an annual journey.
The Pathways World School led, Collaborative Service Project of Friends of Round Square, India had formally begun.
We started with a round of ice breakers – just so to familiarize everyone with the myriad names, schools and places we all came from and yes the challenge is still there to know all the names and to get them right!!!
The focus of the Project is in helping build ‘Toilets for Girls’ at the 2 Government Middle School campuses where Pathways has been working over the past few years as part of its on-going Service programme.
This was chosen as the major purpose owing to the declining enrolment of girls at Middle School and definitely into Secondary School as such amenities are a pre-requisite to respectful schooling for any child, more so a girl child.
The night brought us to a point of reflection where most of us remained passive and silent in response to some difficult and poignant questions about illegal mining, the way the culture alienation has made our smaller towns, cities and most importantly our rural areas deprived of what was their uniqueness into what is just another concrete block!!
The first day of work has been a pleasure – though it began with the pain of an early morning start – which soon made us realize what an ‘early day’ actually entails.
