We split ourselves into two groups and reached our respective destinations a few minutes before Six a.m. (which surprised us as well!) to begin the work.
We had an array of activities awaiting our attention and we were allowed to choose the one we were most comfortable with. From white washing the area to transporting sand in bamboo supported sacks, our stamina was put to test. Other activities such as painting worn out swings, poles, planks, all were successful in exhausting our strength.
Working in this unbearable heat was not an easy task, but still our team was able to manage it pretty well. We got a little support from the village students nearby itself and this proved to be an amazing way for interacting with the villagers and getting a peep into their life. More than the work – it was their enthusiasm which kept us going. The brazen glare of the sun was not able to dampen our spirits and we achieved what we had set for.
After coming back we got enough time to rejuvenate ourselves. Activities such as swimming proved to be a great way for relaxation and interaction. Even Design and Technology/Visual arts facilities were provided and students were overwhelmed to learn the techniques of pottery and pencil stand making which were offered.
We left at 4:00 p.m. for a second session of working for the community. Now our sole purpose was to achieve the target we had set for the day. With the perseverance of the students, we were able to speed up the work process and by 6:30 p.m. we achieved what we had set for and headed back for dinner. It was very touching to see the horde of the young learners from the Government Middle School Raisina, waving frantically and cheering us as we headed back from work – and endorsing their joy with their smiles was more than compensation for the sweat and grime – and of course all the heat that poured from the skies.
The dinner was fulfilling and left us content. Straight from the Dining hall, we left for a short video clip which consisted of pictures of us working. This really boosted our spirits and encouraged us to work with even more enthusiasm tomorrow. This gave way to the first reflection of PWS Round Square. In just a matter of one day we became extremely close and comfortable with other school students and new friendships evolved. We are now ready to start tomorrow’s day at Lake Patauda afresh.
