We began our morning with the service activities at the two school sites. This was a rather unique experience for most of us given the fact that we had never done manual labour in our lives before. We had never in our lives done any physical labour for the betterment of those who were not as fortunate as us. This is what kept our motivation going. Seeing the innocent faces of young beaming children wanting to strive academically gave us inspiration to get up at 5 a.m. every morning. Though most of us are in the midst of our summer vacations, none of us repented working for these children. We were forced to reflect upon our daily lives and compare it to these young children. Also, learning the fact that rural education in India is in an appalling state.
Although the 5 a.m. wakeup call was a shock as most of us are used to lazing into the afternoon during the summer. In addition, the long work hours combined with the 7 hours of sleep make for an exhausting day. On the other hand, the day filled with activities makes for a day without a moment of boredom.
On the second day, we went on a recce of Lake Patauda, we went for a walk, and marked out a path to the lake with paint, it was an interesting walk. Once there, we painted the surrounding trees with lime in order to protect them. We also helped de-silt some of the catchment area of the lake – so that with the onset of monsoon we would have more water in the lake – which could remain year long.
After that in the evening we played basketball. Teams were divided equally with a mixture of students and teachers which made the activity interesting. It was good fun. It was an eventful day and we learnt a lot through the leadership activities, reflection time and community service.
